The Oct. 25 grand opening of the newly finished Miller Middle School building has been indefinitely postponed following the death of a Durango School District 9-R student on Oct. 24. Considering the circumstances, Durango School District 9-R felt the celebratory nature of the grand opening was not appropriate, and will set a new time for the opening event at a later date. Crisis teams and counselors are available to staff, students, and families affected by the events. By Hannah Robertson.

The Miller Middle School Grand opening scheduled for Friday, October 25th, has been postponed following the death of a Durango School district 9-R student on Thursday. The student, a 12-year-old boy who lived at Southwest Horizon Ranch, is the victim of a suspected homicide. He apparently died of stab wounds according to a La Plata County news release about the incident.
A 16-year-old male was arrested in Durango on Thursday at Escalante Drive about six miles from the crime scene. A second victim believed to be the suspect's mother suffered injuries from a blunt object attack. She was taken to CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital in Durango for treatment. In a notice posted on its website and in an email to parents, Durango School District 9-R said it postponed the Miller Middle School grand opening to give the community time to grieve.
Crisis teams and counselors are available. The grand opening had been scheduled to celebrate completion of the new $64 million Middle School on Junction Street.
