The city of Durango and the Durango Fire Protection District have reached an initial agreement for the purchase of the former Durango School District 9-R Administration Building. The current plan, which will need to be approved by the Fire District board of directors and city counselors, will have the City of Durango offer River City Hall and $3,586,273 in exchange for the former 9-R property, which Durango Fire Protection District initially purchased for $6.9 million. This would allow the fire district to build a new, modern fire station that meets its needs on the River City Hall property, and will enable the city to modernize and update the 9-R administration building, and big picture high school sites for a civic center. The offer was made based on the appraisal values of the former 9-R property and the River City Hall property. Durango School District 9-R is encouraging summer learning through its Summer Bridge Program, a way to keep elementary and middle school students engaged and prepared for the 2023-24 school year. Activity Books will be handed out to students in the last couple of weeks of school, with age and grade appropriate activities to encourage engagement with materials over the summer. There are three checkpoints throughout the summer to encourage regular progress. Students can bring in their activity books with the completed activities for the chance to receive up to three prizes, including passes to Lake Nighthorse, Purgatory Resort, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and more. At the start of the school year, students with completed workbooks will be entered into a raffle to win prizes like mountain bikes, skateboards, game consoles, and more. Find more information on the school district's website. The La Plata County Humane Society invites you to join them for the 19th Annual Adopt-A-Thon, June 2nd to June 3rd from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Come join the fun with food, beverages, live music, sales at the Humane Society Thrift Store, and just maybe find yourself a new, furry friend to give a forever home too. Adoption fees will be reduced for the event with the goal of adopting out 50 animals in need of loving homes. The event is made possible by the Durango Family Dog Training, Creature Comforts, the Pet House, Durango Motor Company, and Dog-Gon Gorgeous. Mark your calendars. The 2023 San Juan Brew Fest tickets go on sale Thursday, June 1st at 10:00 AM. The event, August 25th to 26th this year, is an annual fundraiser for United Way of Colorado. Come join the fun at Buckley Park with over 100 beers and ciders to taste, brewed by 35 different breweries and cideries, plus live music, tasty food, and good community.
