It's that time of year, spring cleanup. Make note of when your neighborhood is scheduled for the annual cleanup and make sure to have your items for pickup ready. United Airlines will launch its seasonal, nonstop service to Houston, beginning in May, adding an additional route option through the summer. And Big Brothers Big Sisters invites you to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a gala. You're watching the Local News Roundup brought to you by Dunkin' Donuts and Sky Ute Casino. I'm Sadie Smith. Durango City crews will begin making their way through the city picking up materials for the annual spring cleanup starting April 1st. Accepted items include: furniture, large appliances, scrap metal fencing, carpeting, tiles, drywall, open and dried paint cans, tree trimmings and branches less than eight feet in length and less than eight inches in diameter, and bagged or boxed loose brush and leaves. Please keep yard waste separate from scrap metal. Unaccepted items include: tree stumps, rocks, dirt, liquids, concrete bricks, electronics, batteries, and tires. Place materials outside up to one week before your neighborhood scheduled pickup. Once collection crews have passed through your neighborhood, they will not return. Place materials where you put your trash cans for collection in alleys or curbside. For ease of collection, make sure all items for collection are at least two feet from trenches, trees, bushes, gas meters, hydrants, power poles, and connection boxes. If the pile of materials is too heavy, it will be left in its place. The annual spring cleanup is open to city residents only. Check the city's website to see when your collection this week is. United Airlines has announced it will start its seasonal nonstop service between George Bush International Airport in Houston, Texas, and the Durango La Plata County Airport this May. The flight will be offered Saturdays and Sundays from May 23rd through August 18th. The route also offered in 2023 reflects the growing number of passengers from Southeast Texas. With the additional route to another major hub, passengers flying out of Durango have more options for travel both domestically and internationally. Colorado's annual fishing licenses are on sale for the 2024/2025 season with a new regulation in place for Hermosa Creek. Colorado Parks and Wildlife states that fishing is prohibited 100 feet upstream and downstream of the fish barrier located 0.1 miles below the East fork of Hermosa Creek confluence. Visit the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website for updated information on fees and other fishing regulations. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado invites you to celebrate 40 years of mentoring. TBK Bank and Big Brothers Big Sisters invite you to the 40th birthday gala on April 18th at River Bend Ranch. The all-inclusive event is $125 and directly supports the Bigs and Littles in the program. Past Bigs, Littles, sponsors, and volunteers are all invited as well as anyone who believes in the power of mentorship. Enjoy a night filled with celebration, food, dancing, music, and storytelling as BBBS celebrates the past 40 years and plans for the next 40. RSVP by April 1st to secure your spot.
