After the very successful Big Swing Tournament fundraiser at the end of August, Big Brothers Big Sisters partnered with First Tee Four Corners and the Fort Lewis College golf team for a day at Hillcrest Golf Course where the Bigs and Littles got to try their hands at golf. Blue skies, green grass, with the whack of clubs and laughs all around. What better way to introduce local youths to the joys of sport than with a special event hosted by Fort Lewis College Athletics, First Tee-Four Corners, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. You're watching the, "Local News Network," brought to you by Kroegers ACE Hardware and Happy Pappy's Pizza and Wings, I'm Steven Sigillito. On October 3rd, members from the Fort Lewis College Golf Team, teamed up with Bigs and Littles for the Little Swing Golf Tournament, an opportunity for them to hit the course, after the successful Big Swing Golf Tournament at the end of August. The tournament was put on in partnership with First Tee-Four Corners, an organization that works to introduce the game of golf to kids and encourages a love of the sport. The teams consisted of a Big, Little, and a member of the FLC Golf Team to help show the ropes. For many Littles, it was their first time playing golf and a first for some of the Bigs too. Programs like Little Swing and First Tee-Four Corners, are working to break the stigma that you have to be from a particular economic class or background to participate and enjoy sports like golf. In this case, it was a chance for everyone to shine regardless of their skill level or knowledge of the game. FLC Athletics Director, Travis Whipple, Golf Coach, Shea Sena and Big Brothers Big Sisters, Executive Director, Jenn Bartlett, were among those cheering on the teams. As part of the day, Big Brothers Big Sisters presented the FLC Golf Team with a check from the proceeds of the Big Swing Tournament. Teams talked about how they were looking forward to talking about the day with their friends and family and how it was a great way to build new memories. Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for new mentors or Bigs for the program. Anyone 18 to 80 is welcome, and the commitment is four to six hours a month, whether that's a golf outing or meeting at the library to help with schoolwork.
