Hi, I'm Eric Eicher, employee, owner and president of Alpine Bank Durango. At Alpine Bank we believe in the power of community and connecting you with the resources you need to work, live, and play in our community. I hope you enjoy this edition of Community Insights.

Ignacio Community Library has something for everyone. From reliable wifi and workspaces to exciting community events, the library has served as a vital community resource for many years with a diverse range of programs available to the public.

We have tons of programs. So we have weekly sewing workshops. We have art studio, open art studio every Tuesday. We have a knitting group that's really active. We have Repair Cafe once a month where you can come and have your things repaired instead of putting them in the landfill. We have regular story times for preschoolers and infants, and we have regular book clubs.

In addition to ongoing programs, the Ignacio Community Library hosts many special events. Upcoming highlights include, a class on perfecting green chili sauce and a virtual reality experience for adults where participants can explore Italy through VR headsets.

We have for adults coming up, our virtual travel program that we're really excited about. We're going to be traveling to Italy. We're going to learn about the history of pasta, make some food, and eat it, and also travel to Italy in our Quest Pro headsets.

The Ignacio Community Library is dedicated to bringing people and ideas together for learning and personal growth. To assist community members with legal advice, the library will be bringing back its free legal clinics starting on August 20th.

We have a free legal clinic that's coming back, starting in August, where people can sign up for a 20 minute consultation with a lawyer for free, and those can be really helpful for people who don't have the income, particularly to afford their own legal counsel.

The Ignacio Community Library is dedicated to evolving its offerings based on community feedback.

Well, we're always continuing to work to reach more people and have our programs meet the needs of more people. And so having the surveys after each program really helps and just listening when people tell us what they want, and what they appreciate, and what they would rather have really helps as well.

Senator Hickenlooper Tours New Nursing Training Facility at Fort Lewis College

Fort Lewis College has partnered with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus to establish a new nursing training facility on its campus. U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper toured the facility on Aug. 29, highlighting the importance of local educational opportunities in retaining healthcare professionals in rural areas. $1.3 million in federal funding will support the CU Nursing Fort Lewis College Collaborative, which aims to train students in community-based, rural, and Indigenous healthcare perspectives. Time to Strut Your Stuff

The 5th annual Men in Heels Fundraiser will take place on September 10th at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, supporting the Women’s Resource Center with a fun, competitive event. The Colorado Department of Transportation has begun safety improvements on Cascade Curve on U.S. Highway 550, involving the installation of a permanent concrete barrier to reduce accidents. Durango Parks and Recreation seeks community feedback on two proposed design concepts for Ryler Park, with plans to begin construction later this fall. The Colorado Secretary of State is hosting a contest for a new “I Voted” sticker for this year’s elections, open to all enrolled high school and homeschooled students between ages 13-18. The La Plata Economic Development Alliance has announced the awards for the third round of the Catalyst Housing Funds, with two awardees from Durango and one from Bayfield. The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles encourages Colorado residents to participate in the KOSI 101.1 Teddy Bear Patrol by donating new stuffed animals at participating DMV offices through Wednesday, September 4th, and the Wibit Aqua Park will close for the season on September 2nd. Olympians Return Home

Christopher Blevins, Riley Amos and Savilia Blunk returned to Durango following their Olympic mountain bike races. Durango’s Team USA members enjoyed a competitive respite following the Paris Games. Get Ready for the School Year

Durango School District 9-R has released a new plan to keep traffic congestion at Durango High School down during pick-up and drop-off. Aztec Development Gets Grant Funding

The Northwest New Mexico Arts Council is one of 100 nonprofits nationwide to earn a grant from Lowe’s Hometowns to invest in the community. The money is being used to develop the outdoor space at the newly opened historic Leanor Hotel. The space will be used to teach underserved teens service industry skills. Durango Public Library Adopts New Guidelines For Challenging Materials

The Durango Public Library has revised its materials review policy in response to new state guidelines that allow residents to challenge library materials. The policy mandates that challengers' names remain public and limits challenges to once every two years. This change comes amid a nationwide increase in challenges to library materials, with Colorado seeing 142 attempts to restrict access in 2023 alone. The Mesa Verde Project

New Pickleball Courts Return Positive Reaction

Six new outdoor pickleball courts are open at Schneider Park in Durango. The courts are part of a handful of improvements to the park, including new bike racks, play area, lighting, and landscaping.
