No, riding these snowboards isn't recommended. But do consider them as artwork suitable for hanging in your home. You're watching the Local News Network, brought to you by Serious Texas Bar-B-Q and Pop's Truck and RV center. I'm Wendy Graham Settle. What do you do with an old snowboard? Apparently, many riders donate them to the La Plata County Humane Society thrift store. And as the number of used snowboards proliferated, The Humane Society decided to turn them into works of art with the help of local artists and sell them at a fundraising auction. The fourth annual Powder Hounds Art Auction begins with a launch party at 4:00 PM, Saturday, March 5th, at Ska Brewing. It continues online through Saturday, March 12th. This year's auction features 18 original works of art in a variety of media, with snowboards serving as the canvas. In addition to the art auction, the online event will feature a Powder Pets Photo Contest. Cost to submit a photo of your pet enjoying the winter landscape is $10 for each entry. Votes cost $1 each. All the funds raised will go toward a $1.2 million maintenance and renovation project at the Humane Society.

This year, we are directing the funds to our shelter construction remodel that is actually beginning. And if you have driven past our shelter, you've noticed there's a lot of stuff on our roof. So we are remodeling the roof. We're going to be doing the ceiling, also all the flooring, and the new kennels.

The improvements are the Humane Society's first major renovation in 20 years. And they're coming just in time to handle a pandemic surge of new puppies and kittens that were born to animals that could not be spayed or neutered during COVID shutdowns.
