Road Closures and Delays as Intersection Improvements are Underway

October 30, 2024

Colorado Department of Transportation and Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are continuing work on the US Highway 550, Main Street, and 14th Street intersection. As of Oct. 27, the intersection will be closed for about 11 days while D&SNGRR replaces the railroad tracks as part of overall safety improvements to the intersection, so be prepared to take alternative routes during the closure. An open call to artists in the Four Corners from the Durango-La Plata County Airport went out last week for three installations in the new baggage claim area. The selection committee will be looking for artwork featuring the Four Corners region's cultural, geographical, and historical diversity. Proposals are due by 3:00 p.m. Dec. 17. The City of Durango will begin construction on a new trail at Twin Buttes to create more accessible routes to two trails. The new trail will expand the terrain available for Class 1 E-Bikes and provide an alternative to the current challenging route connecting the Cliffrock Loop and Upper Twin Buttes Trail. The two streets at the intersection of Main Avenue and 14th Street closed Sunday, October 27th for 11 days to accommodate the installation of railroad track improvements as part of overall safety improvements. Drivers and commuters are advised to take alternative routes and be prepared for delays. The city of Durango will be constructing a new trail in Twin Buttes to create a more accessible connection between two of the popular trails. And the Durango-La Plata County Airport is looking for art proposals for three art installations for the new baggage claim area. You're watching the "Local News Roundup," brought to you by FASTSIGNS Durango and San Juan Regional Medical Center. I'm Sadie Smith. The Durango-La Plata County Airport is seeking proposals for cultural murals and installations that will be featured in the new baggage claim area. Part of the ongoing terminal upgrades at the airport. Aviation director, Tony Vicari, said the airport is working with Durango Creative District to put together a selection committee to find pieces that represent and resonate with the cultural vibrancy of Southwest Colorado and the greater Four Corners region. The call to artists is directed at those living in the Four Corners region of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah, and is asking for proposals for murals, paintings, wall-mounted installations, and one sculpture or 3D installation supported from the ceiling that represent the unique environmental, geographic, and/or cultural aspects of the region. Any relevance to regional history, potential for community involvement, inclusivity, and overall impact on the airport experience will be considered. Artists have until 3:00 PM November 6th to submit any questions about the project, and proposals are due by 3:00 PM December 17th. Anyone driving along US Highway 550 has likely been impacted by ongoing work at the US Highway 14th Street and Main Street intersection. As of October 27th, the intersection at 14th Street east and Main Avenue south will be closed to all through traffic for railroad track installation. The project is part of ongoing work to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety at the intersection. Work includes signal technology and lane reconfiguration. The complete closure is expected to last about 11 days. Follow project updates and other delays and lane closures by checking COtrip. Work on a new trail will begin along the Twin Buttes Trail System to connect two popular trails. The city of Durango announced a new more accessible connecting trail between Cliffrock Loop and upper Twin Buttes Trail earlier this month. The current access trail features an advanced downhill and a stout and technical climb preventing novice and some intermediate users from being able to access the other two trails. The new trail will expand availability of terrain available for class one E-bikes with a gentle and meandering alignment featuring some of the vistas of Twin Buttes.
