WHILE NO CORONAVIRUS CASES HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED AS OF MARCH 17TH IN LA PLATA AND ARCHULETA COUNTIES, SAN JUAN BASIN PUBLIC HEALTH AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ARE WORKING AS IF THE CORONAVIRUS IS CIRCULATING . . . THOUGH UNCONFIRMED . . . IN THE AREA. YOU'RE WATCHING THE LOCAL NEWS NETWORK. I'M WENDY GRAHAM SETTLE. THIS IS THE FIRST OF MANY UPDATES YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US OVER THE COMING DAYS AND WEEKS. ON MONDAY, MARCH 16, THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT ISSUED A PUBLIC HEALTH ORDER CLOSING ALL BARS, RESTAURANTS, GYMS, THEATERS AND CASINOS TO SLOW THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. THE ORDER DOES NOT APPLY TO GROCERY STORES, MARKETS, CONVENIENCE STORES, PHARMACIES, DRUG STORES, FOOD PANTRIES, ROOM SERVICE IN HOTELS, AIRPORT CONCESSIONAIRES, AND ANY EMERGENCY FACILITIES NECESSARY FOR RESPONSE. COLORADO HAS 160 CONFIRMED CASES OF THE VIRUS.  NO CONFIRMED CASES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED IN LA PLATA COUNTY, BUT PUBLIC HEALTH AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE BEEN TAKING MEASURES TO REDUCE THE POSSIBLE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS.vALL CITY AND COUNTY PUBLIC BUILDINGS ARE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC. DURANGO SCHOOL DISTRICT 9-R SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED THROUGH MARCH 24TH, FOR SPRING BREAK.  FORT LEWIS COLLEGE WILL EXTEND ITS SPRING BREAK THROUGH MARCH 24TH, THEN WILL TEACH ALL COURSES ONLINE THROUGH APRIL 6TH. THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION HAS SUSPENDED ALL END-OF-YEAR STANDARDIZED TESTS FOR 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR. SAN JUAN BASIN PUBLIC HEALTH URGES PEOPLE AT HIGHER RISK WITH PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS AND ADULTS 60 YEARS OLD OR OLDER TO STAY HOME. AND IT URGES OTHERS TO AVOID CROWDS OF 10 OR MORE AND TO PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING. THAT MEANS DON'T SHAKE HANDS OR HUG. BUMP FISTS OR ELBOWS INSTEAD. INCREASE YOUR DISTANCE FROM OTHER PEOPLE TO 6 FEET TO HELP REDUCE SPREAD. CONSIDER WHETHER YOU WANT TO TAKE A TRIP OR ATTEND PUBLIC GATHERINGS. MANY ORGANIZATIONS IN LA PLATA COUNTY HAVE CANCELED FUND-RAISERS, CONCERTS, AND OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS. CHECK WITH THOSE ORGANIZATIONS' WEB SITES FOR THE LATEST CANCELLATIONS. DISCOURAGE YOUR CHILDREN AND TEENS FROM GATHERING IN OTHER PUBLIC PLACES IF SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED. IF YOU ARE SICK, STAY HOME. WHILE NO VACCINES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED TO PREVENT THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS – OR COVID-19 – SAN JUAN BASIN PUBLIC HEALTH  ENCOURAGES YOU TO PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE. WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN WITH SOAP AND WATER FOR AT LEAST 20 SECONDS, ESPECIALLY AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM, BEFORE EATING AND AFTER BLOWING YOUR NOSE, COUGHING OR SNEEZING. IN A NEWS RELEASE ON MONDAY, MARCH 16TH, SAN JUAN BASIN PUBLIC HEALTH ANNOUNCED THAT COVID-19 TESTS GENERALLY WOULD BE RESTRICTED TO CRITICALLY ILL, HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS. RESIDENTS WHO HAVE SYMPTOMS OF FEVER, COUGH, AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH SHOULD ASSUME THAT THEY HAVE COVID-19 AND DISTANCE THEMSELVES FROM OTHERS. IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS, DO NOT SHOW UP AT YOUR DOCTOR'S OFFICE, URGENT CARE CENTER OR EMERGENCY ROOM. CALL YOUR DOCTOR FIRST FOR A TREATMENT PLAN. DOCTOR JENNIFER RUPP, INFECTIOUS DISEASE PHYSICIAN WITH MERCY'S FOUR CORNERS INFECTIOUS DISEASE AND INTERNAL MEDICINE CLINIC, SAID THAT MERCY REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER IS LIMITING COVID-19 TESTS ONLY FOR THOSE PATIENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR ADMISSION. TESTS RESULTS TAKE THREE TO FOUR DAYS TO PROCESS. PATIENTS SHOULD NOT BE RELUCTANT TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM IF INSTRUCTED BY THEIR PHYSICIANS.  TESTING CURRENTLY IS COVERED BY A GRANT FROM THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT, AND UNINSURED PATIENTS WILL NOT BE BILLED. WHEN GOVERNOR POLIS DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY, INSURANCE COMPANIES WERE INSTRUCTED TO WAIVE PATIENT CO-PAYS AND DEDUCTIBLES FOR COVID-19 TESTING AND TREATMENT. RUPP SAID THAT MERCY HAS DEPLOYED ITS COVID COMMAND TEAM THAT MEETS DAILY TO RESPOND TO CHANGING GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATING PATIENTS AND FOR COORDINATING EFFORTS WITH STATE AND LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS, EMERGENCY RESPONDERS, FLIGHT FOR LIFE AND PRIMARY CARE OFFICES IN DURANGO. MERCY HAS TEN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT BEDS BUT CAN EXPAND BEDS AS NEEDED IN OTHER ROOMS.  IT HAS A TOTAL OF 20 VENTILATORS AVAILABLE TO TREAT RESPIRATORY COMPLICATIONS. IN ADDITION, IT IS WORKING CLOSELY WITH ALL HOSPITALS IN THE CENTURA SYSTEM FOR ADDITIONAL SUPPORT.
