If the tree in your yard likes to hold onto leaves past the Annual Fall Clean-Up, never fear! The City of Durango has partnered with Table to Farm Compost to offer free curbside pick-up of leaves through Nov. 29th. The 21st Annual Festivals of Trees and Wreaths is on the lookout for sponsors for the holiday event. This year, the festival will benefit both Community Connections and the new non-profit Our Own Lives, which was previously the direct services part of Community Connections before the reorganization earlier this year. If you would like to sponsor a wreath or a tree, sign-ups are available online. School is back in session, in school, for Miller Middle School students, but the community is invited to celebrate the grand opening of the school Friday, Oct. 25th. The celebration will include performances by students, prizes, a scavenger hunt, and more! Looking for a safe, fun way to celebrate Halloween? Downtown Durango’s Children’s Halloween is back Thursday, Oct. 31st with over 75 participating merchants. Trick or Treat up and down Main Avenue, and don’t forget to stop by the Trunk or Treat event hosted by TBK Bank. A partnership with the City of Durango and Farm to Compost means you can put your leaves out for collection as late as November 29th. Miller Middle School invites you to its grand opening, Friday, October 25th. The 21st Annual Festival of Trees and Wreaths is looking for community sponsors for a tree or wreath. I'm Sadie Smith. The city of Durango has partnered with Table to Farm Compost to provide a free pickup service for all those fall leaves. With the program, residents can place up to 10 bags of leaves in program-specific bags for curbside collection up until November 29th. To participate, you must use 30 gallon compostable paper leaf bags, available for purchase at Kroegers Ace Hardware, Home Depot, City Market, and Walmart. Sign up for pickup at the Table to Farm Compost website once all your leaves are collected in bags and place them on your curb for collection. The collected leaves will be composted at the Table to Farm composting facility. The program is not to be confused with the City of Durango Annual Fall Cleanup, but is another program funded by the single use bag fee implemented in 2023. Email Table to Farm Compost with any questions about the program. The 21st Annual Festival of Trees and Wreaths returns to Durango and Cortez this holiday season. New this year, the festival will support community connections in Our Own Lives, previously, the Direct Support Service branch of Community Connections. The Festival of Trees takes place in Durango from December 6th through 8th, 2024, 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in downtown Durango, and the Festival of Wreaths will take place over parts of Montezuma County, November 25th through December 8th, 2024. Sponsors are needed for both wreaths and trees, and there are different levels of sponsorship available. Be prepared for Ghosties, ghoulies, and spooky scary skeletons in downtown Durango for Children's Halloween, Thursday, October 31st. Over 75 local merchants are participating in the family-friendly event, handing out candy and non sweet items to all children under 10 accompanied by an adult. TBK Bank will also sponsor a Children's Carnival and Trunk or Treat event with 10 to 15 businesses participating. Games offered by the Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County will augment the Halloween fun free to children 14 and under. All donations go to support the Boys and Girls Club. Everyone is invited to the Miller Middle School Grand Opening, Friday, October 25th.
