Yahtzee: Snowdown, the board game edition. It's your move makes its move with the kickoff party Wednesday, October 9th. Long time Durango wins. No, Snowdown isn't just any regular old game. So make note of key events so as to not miss your go. The Super Amazing Extraordinary Art Show is back after a nearly 10-year hiatus. The one day-only event Saturday, October 12th will feature local art from six local artists in an art show in downtown Durango. Fort Lewis college's enrollment numbers are up 3.47% after a drop in applications earlier this year, due in no small part to the college and board of trustees' effort to help keep college affordable after significant changes to the FAFSA application this year. And it's time to clear out those old cleaning supplies and paint from last summer's project with the free Household Hazardous Waste collection event, October 18th through 19th at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Snowdown: the board game edition, it's your turn kicks off the Fun with a party Wednesday, October 9th where this year's poster design will be revealed. The annual event will run January 24th through February 2nd, 2025. Don't worry, no one has a monopoly on events yet. But make sure to submit your event by October 31st. Don't risk missing out on anything. The follies will be January 24th, the 25th and 31st. And the Do's & Don'ts fashion show is January 29th. You don't need a ticket to ride to enjoy the Light Parade January 31st, but clue into the Snowdown website to see the full list of events and volunteer opportunities. Don't be sorry you missed it, Snowdown is no Trivial Pursuit. Fort Lewis College announced a 3.47% increase in overall enrollment for the 2024/'25 school year with numbers up across undergraduate, graduate, and concurrent enrollment programs. Undergraduate programs saw a 2.2% increase with 3,392 students, up from 3,320. Graduate programs grew 45% with 182 students, up from 108. The concurrent enrollment programs with local schools went up 43%. After lower than average applications, FLC and the board of trustees worked to provide aid to students negatively impacted by changes to the federal application for student aid, including a fund to help bridge the gap for many students who did not receive the same levels of aid that they had the last year. FLC also expanded the FLC tuition promise, which offers free tuition to Colorado families earning less than $70,000 annually to keep college affordable. Have some leftover paint from a project last summer that you don't know how to get rid of? Is that bag of used batteries in your junk drawer getting in the way? Time to get those out of your home with the free Household Hazardous Waste collection event, October 18th through 19th at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The City of Durango and the county host the every-other-year event to help residents safely and responsibly dispose of household hazardous waste. Friday, October 18th will be open for commercial, organization and large household waste from 9 AM to 2 PM. Sign up ahead of time to confirm your spot. For smaller household disposal, drop by Friday between 12 and 2 PM and Saturday between 8 AM and 1 PM. You don't need an appointment. Items that will be accepted include home cleaning supplies, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, batteries, paints, fire extinguishers and more. The event can't accept ammunition and explosives, bio, medical, and radioactive waste, large electric items, refrigerators or items containing refrigerants. Find the full list of accepted and not accepted items online, as well as a way to dispose of certain household waste items year round. For one day only, on Saturday, October 12th, the Super Amazing Extraordinary Art Show will return after a 10-year hiatus. Started in 2009 by local artist Cindy Coleman, Miki Harder, Elizabeth Kinahan, Heather Leavitt Martinez and Amy Vaclav, the art show was a chance for the artists to put together a quick but fun art show. The one-day event continued until 2013, but this year, Coleman, Harder, Kinahan, and Vaclav have brought it back, along with new talent in Mariah Kaminsky and Allison Leigh Smith.
