The Southern Ute Indian Tribe is seeking public feedback on its Water Quality Standards revisions. The 50-day public comment period opened Nov. 12 and will close Jan. 2, with a public hearing scheduled for Jan. 16 at 10:00 a.m. Last month, the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum was awarded the 2024 Community Impact Award from the Association of Tribal Libraries, Archives, and Museums for its Reflections of Honor Exhibit. The exhibit is a year-round space for Tribal veterans to share their stories through interviews, photos, military objects, digitized military documents, and more. Applications for the MOLAS Scholarship - Meaningful Opportunity through Learning and Achievement - are open. The Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado administers the scholarship and is open to all first-generation college students. There are observations all day long for the Winter Solstice on Saturday, Dec. 21. Chaco Canyon will host a sunrise observation, Farmington Public Library will host a noon observation, and Aztec Ruins National Monument will celebrate a sunset observation. Each will feature a celestial alignment with the shortest day of the year. Ignacio Community Library has new hours for 2025. Starting Jan. 1, the library will be open 8:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 a.m. t0 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday - the library will remain closed on Sundays. The public comment period on proposed changes to the Southern Ute Tribe water quality standards will close on January 2nd, so there is still time to review and submit any comments. Depending on your favorite time of day, there's a place to celebrate the winter solstice in New Mexico's San Juan County. Applications for the MOLAS Scholarship designed to assist first-generation students with college and vocational school tuition and room and board are now open. And the Ignacio Cultural Center and Museum's "Reflection of Honor Exhibit," was recognized with an award from the Association of Tribal Libraries, Archives & Museums. The Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado has opened the MOLAS Scholarship application. MOLAS stands for Meaningful Opportunity through Learning and Advancement Scholarship is open to first-generation students in La Plata County. Recipients will receive up to 85% of their tuition, and room and board are covered at any Colorado or Four Corners Public College, university, trade, or vocational school. The scholarship is renewable up to four years. Applications are due March 2nd, and decisions will be announced in early April. Information on how to apply, eligibility requirements, and more, can be found online. The Southern Ute Indian Tribe public comment period for proposed revisions to water quality standards is still open. The tribe opened a 50-day comment period, November 12th, on proposed revisions developed from a tri-annual review of the tribe's water quality standards. The changes reflect updates to comply with federal regulations, or to meet tribal water quality goals. You can find the proposed changes and provide your comment on the tribe's website. The public comment period ends January 2nd. There will be a public hearing on the proposed changes January 16th, at 10:00 AM. There will be an option to attend in person or online. Whether it's your first time observing the winter solstice or your 100th time, San Juan County, New Mexico is full of places to observe the solstice. Chaco Culture and National Historic Park will host a sunrise observation. The park will open early at 6:30 AM for the first 100 visitors, and the observation will take place at the Kletso Great House, where the sunrise aligns with the Northern Wall. Warm up at Farmington Public Library where the sun will align with the winter solstice marker at 12 Noon. Arrive by 11:15 to enjoy performances by The Delbert Anderson Trio, and storytelling by Dovie Thomason. At the end of the day, make your way to Aztec Ruins National Monument to observe the sunset, which aligns with the back wall of the Aztec West Great House. Observers are asked to arrive by 4:30 PM for the sunset at 4:59. All the are free and open to the public. The Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum won the 2024 Community Impact Award, a celebration of all initiatives and programs that exemplify community engagement and excellence in all tribal archives, libraries, and museums across the US. The award is for the museum's Reflections of Honor Exhibit, which honors Southern Ute Veterans who served in the Armed Forces from World War I to present day. The goal of the exhibit is to provide tribal member veterans with a permanent year-round space to share their stories, through interviews, Military objects, digitized Military documents, photos, and other sources. The exhibit will continue to feature new and existing artifacts within the museum's collection, to highlight the chronology of the roles of Southern Ute members in American wars and conflicts. Ignacio Community Library has new hours for 2025, make sure to take note. Mondays through Thursdays, the library is open 8:30 to 6:30, and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Fridays and Saturdays.
